“The relationship between Mona and Julia in the film is my way of talking about the relationship between the North and the South of Sudan. We have a lot of love for one another, but also a huge heritage of differences, to say the least. There is  the long history of the slave trade, actually the longest history of civil war in Africa. There’s a lot of complication, but we did live together in the same place, in the same country, so I wanted the relationship between the two characters to portray that.”
